These discussion questions are based on the sermon that Daniel Mendoza delivered on 6/13/20.

Here are some discussion questions that you can talk about with the people that are in your home with you. You can also call a friend who was watching and discuss it with them. Or you can break out a notebook and use these questions to journal your thoughts on the message.

1. Why is it that sometimes we don't embrace some people in church?

2. What are some ways that are churches can be different?

3. What has been your person experience in church?

4. How do you view the current church culture?

5. Why did Jesus choose those particular disciples?

6. Why did Jesus choose Judas?

7. What is the message that God is trying to give to you from this sermon?

8. How can you apply this message to your life?

I see that we masked our identity every Sabbath and now, every time we jump in a virtual zoom events, as though we are ready to minister to people who have gone or going through a period of season in their life. Deep inside, we’re the one who need ministering. Since no one likes to speak about it, we remain hurt and broken. I recently went to church and the people who led out really ministered to me. I felt I was recognized as a person rather than just someone at church who contribute her time to keep the church organized. I felt I could address the things that bothered me without judgement, and they reminded me how the Love of God prevails all things by utilizing the lesson. What struck me the most was that I did not even have to speak, they recognized I was screaming in silence. They described my face as “overwhelmed and draining”. Having this intimate sessions really helps dig deeper in getting to know your steps with Christ.

I would like this type of church to stay a little longer with us because what I had felt for a while now is some people aren’t genuinely doing the work for the people, but for them to feel recognized by the people. People are pleased to receive awards or being acknowledged for doing their task for God. If we start thinking “submission” (Removing ourselves and focusing on the mission), we would help so much more people in the community without using any of our time celebrating ourselves what we ought to do for the people. I truly love today’s sermon. Pastor Mendoza is familiar of what is really going on in the church and he is not afraid to tell it as it is. I just wish we could implement change without over analyzing what’s in the church manual. I’m a Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Analyst by trade and I understand guidelines are important, but when those guidelines aren’t working anymore, we must shift to something that will work for the organization. We are not a one church fits all so why do we have one manual telling us that we are?

What a wonderful experience you had with fellowship.

You said "I would like this type of church to stay a little longer with us"
What type of church are you referring to?
Do you mean online church? Small groups meeting at the building? or are you referring to the type of fellowship and care you experienced?

To clarify with the church manual... the church manual was written as a guide for churches that would need to be adapted in certain situation.

I would like small group meetings on the lawn near the church without get stung by any bees of course. The setting kind of reminds me of Camp Berkshire. The experience is also something I haven’t experience either. I know this isn’t something that will come frequently, but it felt good that day.

You’re right. the church manual is written as a guide, but for me, it feels people would use the guide when its convenient for them to use it against someone else when things get complicated to get their way. I see it happen at church at least twice. I wish they see it how you see it- that the manual is just a guidance for common practices to be display in church.

7. What is the message that God is trying to give to you from this sermon?
The message that God is trying to give to me through this sermon is that God can use any and everybody to do His work. God has the power to change or use any and everyone when He chooses.

I also learned the importance of creating a welcoming church space for all who visit the church and those who are regular church members. If God accepts us as we are, it only logic for us to be accepting of others.

Something that I found interesting is the idea of a "Professional Christian". I appreciated the speaker's transparency. With that said, another lesson that I learned from the sermon is the importance of ministering from an authentic place...meaning a pure heart. The speaker explained that His words did not match up with his actions, he stated that people heard what he was saying because he was so good at "being a Christian" but He knew that he had other "thoughts" in his heart.

As I deepen my walk with Jesus. I am beginning to understand that there is a clear distinction between the heart and the mind. Sometimes we know what is the right thing to do because we have that knowledge in our minds however in our hearts' desires might be completely different. The aim is for our thoughts, actions, words and spirit are aligned. The ironic thing is that, this work, we cannot do it on our own at all; it is only God who does this work in us.

No doubt, the post is incredible and also. Every time I read your blog I was just stuck with the content of the post. How easily you describe every aspect of the topic of the post.
